“As I had just retired, I wanted to fill in some of my spare time helping the community"- Mark Hillier
Mark Hillier is one of Nambour & Districts Care’s, volunteer drivers. Mark can collect clients anywhere from Doonan to Kawana. Mark will take passengers to appointments all along the Sunshine Coast and to Brisbane.
The criteria for a volunteer driver at Nambour & District Care is someone who is the following;
A safe, responsible driver with an open QLD licence
Someone who is caring and supportive to our frail, aged clients
Someone who is friendly and enjoys cheerful chit chat with clients and most importantly
Someone who is punctual and patient.
We asked Mark a couple of questions about his time as a volunteer driver with Nambour & District Care. Here is what he has to say;
1. How did you hear about NDC volunteer opportunities
“I heard a community advertisement on a local radio station, looking for volunteer drivers”
2. What influenced your decision to sign up?
“As I had just retired, I wanted to fill in some of my spare time helping the community. I knew a former boss had joined Blackall Range Care Group about 3 years ago, and I liked the idea of reuniting with him on a voluntary basis”
3. How long have you been volunteering with NDC?
“I have been a volunteer driver with Nambour & District Care since January 2019”
4. What has surprised you about becoming a volunteer with NDC?
5. Can you name any highlights you had during your time as a volunteer with NDC?
“I have enjoyed meeting most of the clients I have transported. A lot have interesting stories to tell and some I have known or had common acquaintances”
6. Would you recommend volunteering with NDC to others and why?
“I would recommend Nambour & District Care or Blackall Range Care Group to anyone who wants to volunteer their time”
